What should Diwali mean to us ?

Diwali is being celebrated all over the country today. One of the greatest festivals of light all over the world. Houses are being decorated with all sorts of lights, candles, lamps, all are being used. All people are supposed to enjoy tonight.

I went out of my home, I saw the watchman working as he did daily, I walked forwardI saw small merchants on road side, they were just working as they did daily. I went to a coffee shop, I found the waiters working as they did daily, I walked a bit more, I saw some poor homeless people living on the road as they always did. As I saw few poor people living on the road, I just glanced on top, I found great lights glowing, symbolism of Diwali celebration, and also symbolism of two INDIAS we have today. At one side, we can see one of the best diwali celebrations on top of the building, same time we can see poor people living wondering where they will get their next meal from.

Today whole world is looking India as a superpower, 3rd most powerful nation in the world, yet the irony is that the 3rd most powerful nation in the world, cant assure two times healthy meal to its citizens. It cant make sure that a poor person has a smile on his face on Diwali, we fell so proud of our billionaires whenever a new list of world's richest people are announced, why don't we feel ashamed when we see reports in media of, millions of people living in abject poverty.

Well, its not just enough to see that we can see two Indias, which are growing at an excellent speeds, one at a positive growth rate, one at probably much faster negative growth rate. Poor are becoming more and more poor. Life for a poor is becoming more and more difficult. He has to work harder and harder, yet he can't find a decent life.

Why is this happening? Why we have this unequal wealth distribution in country? Who is responsible for this? Can we ever merge two Indias? How can we do that? Can we make life of a poor better?

Well, I am having a lot of thoughts right now, so may be will continue on this later.

very true .. unfortunately this is not only in India where society is fragmented between poor and rich but almost every courtry in the world even so called developed nations as well. But more unfortunate about us is we have not society divited in poor and rich but hindu/muslim ... north indian/south indian.. if this was not enough we have dalit/vaish/ so on and so forth.
Probably this divison of society is more painful and difficult to cover compared to poor/rich.

totally agree to this point, that we need to address a lot of divisions in society, but all these things, castes, religions etc are becoming less and less relevant to modern educated people, however the difference between haves and have-nots is ever increasing. We don't seem to care enough for development of society in general and those of us do care, fail to understand how can they help.

P.S. I would be very glad to know identity of ones who write comments on my blog :)
