Hunger Stikes in Andra Pradesh

Jagan Reddy, quit Congress few days back, announced that he will launch a new party in 45 days, few days after announcement goes on to a hunger strike, claiming to support compensation to farmers who lost their crops.

Before going further I want to clarify one thing, I am not against Jagan, I barely know anything about him. But still does it take any brains to see that this all hunger strike is a drama? Are people in this country so stupid to understand that real motive is to get sympathy of people to launch a new party?  He was part of Congress few days back, couldn't he have served people better in staying with the government and serving people?

When I saw at this news, I realized that hunger strikes seem to have become a standard way of protest in some parts of country specially Andhra Pradesh. This has been used as a way of protest for a long time. History of hunger strikes predates our Independence itself. It has been used first for Dali rights, then for State reorganization on linguistic basis, Telangana movement, and other countless occasions. I am sure there were only few of the instances when the hunger strikes were not motivated for electoral gain. In fact it seems that this has been used an easiest approach to get attention, sensationalize issues and gain people sympathy.
If you really want to do something for people, community, nation then why don't you just do something meaningful? Why is that we have most of the leaders in our county who just do anything and everything just which makes them gain votes and then they use those votes to ultimately loot the Exchequer.

I believe that civil society should step up and expose such practices used by political parties. Supreme court should also act as guardian of Indian constitution and recommend some guidelines to government implementing some strict rules to avoid such unfair practices for petty electoral gain.

What should Diwali mean to us ?

Diwali is being celebrated all over the country today. One of the greatest festivals of light all over the world. Houses are being decorated with all sorts of lights, candles, lamps, all are being used. All people are supposed to enjoy tonight.

I went out of my home, I saw the watchman working as he did daily, I walked forwardI saw small merchants on road side, they were just working as they did daily. I went to a coffee shop, I found the waiters working as they did daily, I walked a bit more, I saw some poor homeless people living on the road as they always did. As I saw few poor people living on the road, I just glanced on top, I found great lights glowing, symbolism of Diwali celebration, and also symbolism of two INDIAS we have today. At one side, we can see one of the best diwali celebrations on top of the building, same time we can see poor people living wondering where they will get their next meal from.

Today whole world is looking India as a superpower, 3rd most powerful nation in the world, yet the irony is that the 3rd most powerful nation in the world, cant assure two times healthy meal to its citizens. It cant make sure that a poor person has a smile on his face on Diwali, we fell so proud of our billionaires whenever a new list of world's richest people are announced, why don't we feel ashamed when we see reports in media of, millions of people living in abject poverty.

Well, its not just enough to see that we can see two Indias, which are growing at an excellent speeds, one at a positive growth rate, one at probably much faster negative growth rate. Poor are becoming more and more poor. Life for a poor is becoming more and more difficult. He has to work harder and harder, yet he can't find a decent life.

Why is this happening? Why we have this unequal wealth distribution in country? Who is responsible for this? Can we ever merge two Indias? How can we do that? Can we make life of a poor better?

Well, I am having a lot of thoughts right now, so may be will continue on this later.

Ayodhya Verdict!!

After a long wait Ayodhya verdict was finally delivered by High Court. Ayodhya verdict has been rightly compared with countless landmines by a newspaper. Any wrong foot could have caused a massive damage.
As we know verdict divides the disputed site into three equal parts. 2/3rd going to the Hindus and 1/3rd going to Muslims. Summary of judgments of all 3 separate judges can be read in my other blog
I don't want to go and claim whether judgment is correct or not correct. The main questions which needed answers from Ayodhya judgment might never be answered. We don't have a time machine by which we can go and see if Babar ordered a temple to be broken. Again, I don't even want to go into details if that is even relevant. A lot of bloggers have written that that thing might not be relevant at all.
So why am I writing this blog? Well, I read comments by some politicians who have not even now left their vote bank politics, they again are trying to exploit this issue. Off course, we all know that BJP came to powers because of this single issue. I feel great that BJP finally seems to have matured, not to exploit this issue further. Then who is trying to exploit this? We always have some incompetent useless politicians who can never think beyond votes and KURSI.
I feel so ashamed of them.

I feel that at least we appear to have moved on since 1992. Most of county has accepted High court judgment. But still we have not moved on enough, if that had been a case government would not be required to deploy this big security forces before judgment.
I wish I can see a day in my life time, when we don't care if a Mandir/Masjid is built at some place.

Super Kings win Champions leage, what does it mean to us ?

It was great to see how Super Kings clinched the title beating Easter Warriors from South Africa in Champions league final. I am very much delighted on this win specially because of the facts as below.

Murali Vijay was the highest run scorer in the series. It was great to see that he played great on South African tracks. He appeared rock solid in defense and off course displayed he is capable of playing all kinds of shots.

Suresh Raina once again proved how great a talent he is. Importantly I saw him hitting sixes on few short pitched balls. Good sign for Indian Cricket.

R. Ashwin, the man of the series, had a great tournament, being an all rounder, he can add nice value to Indian team.

We can see that this is the time when Chennai Super Kings won the cup because our Indian players performed brilliantly. They were not that much dependent on foreign players performances. This appears a great sign for India.

Yet there is one thing that still bothers me is that we didn't see even a single fast bowler who can make a difference. We have a whole army of batsman who can be better than any one else in the world, but we fail to find a single fast bowler.
Unfortunately we can't win all the matches just because of our batsmen, we need to have great fast bowlers in India as well. I just hope that IPL franchise and captain takes it seriously, they can help by making sure that our young Indian fast bowlers get enough time with foreign greats to learn from them.
I hope some day in near future we shall have a new breed of great fast bowlers that will make India the greatest team in the world ever.

Dabangg Review !!

Much awaited Salman thriller Dabangg released today. Before watching this movie I had heard from people about name Chulbul Pandey and Malaika item number "Munni Badnam Huyi". Off course to a lot of people these two things make a good package in itself :).

Salman makes an entry which is very similar to the one he made in Wanted. I believe this has been done deliberately to cash in his Wanted popularity again. I won't like to give too many spoilers here. But I think can still write few things about movie.

First half seems to has been stretched too much. Doesn't seem that much has been happening in story there. Although in between there are some quick witted and interesting dialogues which can give you a few laughs. But I was not very impressed with first half.
Second half story is a bit faster, things appear to happen and I found it better. In whole movie Salman's role seems to be replica of what we had in Wanted, in terms of acting. So Core Salman fans are in there for a treat.
Arbaaz Khan plays his role very well, playing step brother of Salman. Sonu Sood, does total justice with his role, playing a criminal politician, apart from the funny faces he makes in item number "Munni badnam huyi". Sonakshi Sinha, appears cute in a village girl's role wearing traditional Indian clothers, although she doesn't have much to do in the movie.
My verdict, don't go with too much expectations, if you expect less you will like it, otherwise if you liked Wanted you might still like it.

24 !!!

24, This has been a number in my mind for a really long time. What I believed was 24 is a number when you achieve that against your age, it should mean a lot.
What my idea of 24 is that, when a person is 24 he definitely should behave like a grown up, think like a grown up, thing in mature way, behave in mature way and all and all.

If I try to assess myself I definitely won't say that I am satisfied with myself. May be I set expectations too high for myself or may be I just did not have enough efforts to achieve what I wanted to achieve, I just took things for granted. Whatever be the case it is time to reassess some things. It is again time for resolutions. Time again for seeking a new beginning.
Here are few resolutions I will try to make for myself. I will keep it simple and achievable.

1. Exercise daily for 15 minutes
2. Reading newspaper regularly.
3. Writing a post in my blog at least once in a week (probably during weekend)
4. Take out 4 hours time daily for reading something or learning something (that has to be done using stop watch so no concession on this)
5. Utilize time in the best possible way.

Will add more to the list later.

Who is good and Who is bad?

I have a friend who believes that all the people in this world are bad. There is one who believes that most of them are good. Thinking over this a thought came to my mind, In our whole life we start on categorizing people we come across in two categories, Good People, and Bad people.

Now question comes how do we define people to be good and bad. This thing is very simple when we meet a person just once. For example, when you are standing in a row to get a ticket from railway station, a big guy comes who refuses to stand in row and tries to get a ticket. Or say you are waiting for green light for few minutes, suddenly a car passes by ignoring traffic rules. The first thing which comes to our mind for which people are these people are bad.

Now let's look at a bigger picture. By incidence the first person who came grab ticket without standing in queue has an old sick mother waiting for him at the platform who can't afford to be on her own. The second person who broke traffic rules had a son he has to pick up at school at 5:30 and it is already 5:40. If you know of these facts, will you still call these both persons to be bad? Do you not see anything good in them?

Things get complicated when we interact with same people day by day and then start making opinions about them. You have a boss who pushes you hard for work, marks you absent for coming late but considers fairly when you ask for a leave, how will you categorize him? Is he good or bad? Does it mean that he is good as well as bad? More importantly if some tactics of this boss are bad for you, how does Company perceive this? If a boss can get you work more company will consider him to be good, won't it? This brings us to a point that good and bad are things can be relative. What is good for us can be bad for us and vice versa.

One thing that is important here is that sometimes things are good for us but we just dont realize it at that moment, for example our parents always wanted us to read more, study well. Our teachers wanted us to study, take part in extra curricular activities. It is just that at that time we dont realize that those things are good for us. We just blame parents/teachers for being so hard with us.

Ok, let's consider another aspect of good and bad. An auto driver finds a cell phone in the back seat of his auto. The passenger is gone. Now auto driver is in dilemma what to do with that. He has few options 1) Try to find out owner of mobile by using numbers in the phone 2) give phone to police station 3) Keep the phone for himself. There is a very big chance that a poor auto driver might just keep the phone to himself. Now that auto driver again on his way with a passenger he finds that a person is lying on the road after an accident, all people are surrounding him but no one is doing anything. He just asks the person in auto to drop off and he puts the person who suffered into his auto and gets him to hospital. Meanwhile he loses quite some amount, he loses the fare he had got if he had not asked the passenger to leave when he decided to help the injured. He also probably loses quite a big amount of his time in helping the injured man getting to the hospital. Now I have a question for you is this auto driver good or bad?

As a matter of fact the above example was quite a simple, we can take more complicated cases. There have been many criminals who have done bad things but they have also done few great things for which they are worth praise. I off course refrain from naming anyone. A lot of time persons who bends laws are bad de Jure but de facto they are doing good things. All of us believe that Robin Hood was a good person.

All above ideas lead us to a point where we can say that no one is absolutely bad and good. It is just how we define good and bad which matters. Simiarly situations lead a person do different things at different times. So it is not very easy to determine good and bad in a person.

What can a person read?

Many times we come across some books, some articles which change the way we believe in things, which makes us feel that everything the write has written is correct. Sometimes they are so convincing that we just change our whole life because of them. A lot of writers have had this convincing power.
Is there some way of knowing what is correct and what is not? Today I was reading this article on Maoists
http://radicalnotes.com/journal/2009/11/19/war-against-the-maoists-but-who-are-they-and-what-do-they-want/

This gives a totally different picture of maoism, which off course appears very convincing. Well I don't want to discuss about maoism here because I don't really know if author of this article is correct, but this definitely sparks a question into my mind , what if this article consists of facts. What is our government is actually just trying to exploit people there.
It becomes so difficult to figure out what to believe and what not to.

Some resolutions

Hmm, its not something new really. Again I am thinking how I waste my time. Again I am thinking of making a very great plan for making things better so that I feel great. But is it going to change things really? Shall I again not forget this after 2 days and continue things old way? Well, only time will tell those but here are few points I will try again

1. Reach office on time say 9-9:30 and come back by 6-7.
2. Read something/learn something/hang out for 5-6 hours daily.
3. Each time if something comes up which takes up time, think if it is worth, if its not then leave that. Don't waste time on anything.
4. Keep in touch with few friends I have.
5. Take care of health and diet.

Sachin .. the Legend

IPL 3 is quite close now. I was just wondering which of the matches are going to be the ones which will be watched by most number of people in ground as well on TV. I believe definitely this is going to be the matches of Mumbai Indians, the only reason for that is going to be its captain Sachin Tendulkar. The name has become much more than the man who carries it. A symbol of Indian pride, a person who at times brings smiles to faces of hungry poor indians who have little money to eat but even they forget their sufferings while this man is on the crease. This is the man who was seen as the only bone opposition needed to break Indian batting line up. Well, off course we are proud that this is not the case anymore because of some brilliant youngsters but I am sure no bowler feels less happy now when he gets his wicket. He has just kept on getting better with age and now he is at his best. I am sure whole country will be watching him when he is playing in IPL or worldcup or whatever games he plays.

Recently he made 200 runs in a single match. I believe this is a record he is the only person in the world who deservers it. It is a symbol of his brilliance and excellence. I personally had said this thing to many of my friends that I want Sachin to make a 200. I am glad this thing happened and I hope he will be able to do something even better. Something tells me the best of Sachin is yet to come. It might be the next world cup, I hope it is. I believe he deserves a world cup. Now, we even have the formidable batting line up and well can say an average bowling which can get us world cup. I just hope this comes true.

Some random thoughts

Sometimes I wonder can right be an absolute term? What we think is right can actually be wrong isn't it? Is there any way we can be absolutely sure of something? And even if we know that something is right do we always choose to do it? Why not? Why do we want to do so many things even though we know they are not right?
If you are having two battles in yourself, as some crazy people call it fight between heart and brain, which should win? Which one of mind and heart is actually right? Is it the same one which makes choice which makes us happy? If something makes us happy isn't it right? What if the thing we believe is right, doesn't make us happy? Is that thing still right?
Should emotions be allowed to affect your judgment? After all that is what makes us human isn't it? How can we ignore them? Should we ignore them? But then shall we be human anymore? Shall we be happy by ignoring our own emotions, suppressing them, pretending they don't exist or pretending not to care for them.
Well in any case life just goes on doesn't it?

Should we just ignore them? What should be the things which should make us happy? Should that be materialistic? If yes, why? How do we decide which things make us happy? How do we even know what happiness is? How do we choose which things make us happier?

Life never stops but there are just few things which make our lives better easier, which make us happier. Should we just ignore few of them for others?

Ashish

Two numbers in set whose sum is equal to a given number

Approach 1 O(N^2) :- Try summing each number in array with all other numbers in array and if the sum is equal to given number return true. This approach in worst case will be O(n^2). In best case we can be lucky to have first two numbers in array to be such that their sum is equal to a given number.

Approach 2 O( n Log n) : Sort the numbers. Now keep two pointers one at start and one at end. pseudo code can be something as below. I havent tested this code so bear with me if it has some syntax error :)

bool checksum(int sortedArray[], int len, int required_sum)
{
int start = 0;
int end = len-1;

while(start < end)
{
if((sortedArray[start]+sortedArray[end])>required_sum)
{
end = end -1;
continue;
}

if((sortedArray[start]+sortedArray[end])<required_sum)
{
start = start +1;
continue;
}

else return true;

}

}

Good by 2009, Welcome 2010

One more year of our lives just passed. This time it was called 2009. Lets me just try to summarize things which happened to me in 2009.
Well lets start with professional life, I started working in Equity Infrastructure team at MS. I spent around 3 months there, later I moved to private wealth management. Since then I have been working here. I have worked on a few nice projects like caching system, swaps introduction. I have got promoted to Senior Associate from Associate. Well to summarize nothing much has changed at the job. Off course this has been practically first year which I spent working. Lets also just recollect things which I have learned this year, well I have learned quite a lot about office culture, and lots of practical things which I am going to cherish life long. Technically this year I havent improved my skills the way I could have, I am planning to do that in 2010 now.

Ok, lets start with personal life. Nothing has changed (and I cant express how Happy and content I am for this). One more comfort this year has been that I am able to afford some money for things which I want to do. I also have started to pay a slight attention to myself. 2009 was the year where I started to buy clothes for myself and actually put a lot of effort in trying to select them. Now lets come to what have I learned this year. Hmm, when it comes to personal life experiences I off course wont share with you all on a blog :P, but yes I can say I am getting mature pretty fast now and soon I will have wisdom of a grandpa :)

To summarize I can say 2009 has been an year where I have had very few ups and downs. To be honest this is the best thing in life that nothing happens and life just continues peaceful just like 2009. Good bye 2009, you have been a great year for me where I have not lost anything.

Now it is time to welcome 2010 also. I wish 2010 turns out to be a great year as well. People, I am not going to write down my resolutions over here so that nobody can point out if I fail them :P. Welcome 2010.

Ashish Meena
